According to the American Lung Association, approximately 8 million people in the U.S. are at high risk for lung cancer, with more than 200,000 cases diagnosed annually. Early detection offers the best chance of survival, but financial and transportation barriers often discourage regular screening.
Partnering with Samsung Neurologica and Summit Bodyworks, Winnebago Specialty Vehicles developed a platform that allows for a mobile 32 slice CT in a Winnebago shell. The completed vehicles can be deployed to at-risk people who are outside the regular service area of conventional healthcare systems.
The Mobile CT Clinic features the BodyTom Elite, the world’s first portable battery-powered full-body 32-slice CT scanner. A lithium-ion battery-based energy management system replaces the traditional generator to provide onboard power while reducing vehicle emissions.
Traveling to at-risk patient populations and providing lung cancer screenings, the Mobile CT Clinic will improve screening and care for underserved populations. In addition to reducing direct costs to the health care system by $10 - $15 million, other key impact results include:
“By eliminating the transportation, financial, and resource barriers to care, we believe this program will improve the quality of life and enhance survivorship for lung cancer patients in the Carolinas,” said Mellisa Wheeler of the Levine Cancer Institute.
